Doraemon is a Japanese manga series that was written & illustrated by Fujiko Fujio. The story is centred around a robotic cat named Doraemon who travels back in time from the 22nd century to help a boy named Nobita Nobi.
The manga series was first published in December 1969 & to date is one of the best-selling manga series in the world with over 100 million copies sold as of 2015.
Doraemon is considered to be a Japanese cultural icon & in 2008 Japan's Foreign Ministry selected Doraemon as the nation's first anime ambassador. This was done in hopes to help people from other countries understand Japanese anime better & enhance their interest in Japanese culture.
Besides being a manga series, Doraemon was also turned into an anime television series (available in over 30 countries), a feature film (the highest grossing anime film in the world), & a musical.
In April 2002 Doraemon was listed by Time magazine as one of 22 Asian heroes, known as "The Cuddliest Hero in Asia".
In September 2011 the Fujiko F. Fujio museum opened & featured Doraemon as the star.
